? ? SCHMERTZ Margaret Gage "Nanny" Margaret Gage "Nanny" Schmertz passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, in her home. Peggy was born March 5, 1921, in Toledo, OH, to Marie and Edward Gage. She graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1939 and The Toledo Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army During WWII, as a nurse in India. On the ship returning to the States, she met Captain William E. Schmertz, who proposed to her seven days later. They married when they got back to California. Bill and Peggy made their life together in Toledo, where they raised three children. Peggy's husband of 59 years passed away in 2003. Peggy was a registered nurse working many years at local hospitals and retired from the University of Toledo Student Health Center. She was active in the China-Burma-India Veterans Association. She is represented at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Washington, D.C. and contributed to Ideals, Courage and Hope. The Experience of Soldiers in America's Wars, a nationwide history project. She was an original member of the Harvard Nurses Study, one of the longest-running medical research projects. Peggy was a charter member of Hampton Park Christian Church. Peggy is survived by Bill and Mary Schmertz of Columbus, OH, Judy Gersz of Toledo and Caroline and Terry Doran of Toledo, Jessica (Schmertz) and Roger Sandoval of Tampa, FL, David Gersz of San Diego, CA, Daniel Gersz and Michael Gersz of Columbus, OH, and Charissa and Rebecca Doran of Toledo. A memorial service will be at Hampton Park Christian Church, 4234 Monroe St., Toledo, OH 43606, on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 11 a.m. with a luncheon following in the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hampton Park Christian Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Toledo School for the Arts. Nanny was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and she will be missed. ? ? ??
