Michael W. Carmean, 59, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family Friday, February 20, 2009, from complications of Scleroderma. Michael was born on August 28, 1949, to L.G. and Evelyn (Koenig) Carmean. A 1967 graduate of Memorial High School in St. Marys, Ohio, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Bowling Green State University in 1971, where he was also a member of the '67-'68 Baseball team. He earned his Master of Education degree in Administration and Supervision in 1981 from the University of Toledo where he also completed his Specialist degree. He taught Math for one year at Fairmont East in Kettering, Ohio. He then taught Math at Whitmer High School from '72-'84 where he also coached Football, Baseball, and Wrestling. From '84-'86 he was an Assistant Principal, later Principal, Athletic Director, and Math teacher at Lakota High School. Mike was Principal at Northwood High School from '86-'91 and then Superintendent of Northwood Schools from '91-'94. He returned to Washington Local Schools as Superintendent in 1994 and retired in 2007. Cherishing his memory are his loving wife of 34 years, Patricia (Pedro) Carmean; their children, Megan (James) Boothroyd of Oak Park, Illinois, and Patrick Michael of Toledo. He is also survived by his father L.G. Carmean of St. Marys, Ohio, brother Terry (Debbie) Carmean of St. Marys, Ohio, and sister Diane (Dave) Blackburn of Wapakoneta, Ohio, mother-in law Mary L. Pedro, sisters-in-law ("The Outlaws") Mary (David) Bain, Ann Barash, Eileen Durham, Margaret Schotter, and Colleen (Ed) Taylor, brothers-in-law Alfred J. Pedro, John (Laura) Pedro, James (Sue) Pedro, Timothy (Karen) Pedro, and Martin (Lynne) Pedro. Mike is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Carmean, and sister, Christine (Carmean) Woods. The family wishes to thank the caring nurses on the 8th Floor and CCU of The Toledo Hospital, and especially Christine of Palliative Care and Michelle with Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialists who moved mountains so that Mike got home to rest. They also wish to thank Bashar Kahaleh, M.D., Lori Gottwald, M.D., and all the wound-care and visiting nurses who cared for Mike, Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their kind and gentle services, Tom Baker for his companionship and giving his time to take Mike to his many medical appointments, the WLS Maintenance Department, and to all the family and friends who offered to help Mike in any way with their continued prayers and support. Visitation will be held Friday, February 27, from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 West Sylvania Avenue. Funeral services will be at Christ the King Church, 4100 Harvest Lane, Saturday, February 28, at 12 noon. The family suggests tributes to the Scleroderma Foundation, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, and the Whitmer Athletic Boosters.
