Obituary for Robert Grau

Robert “Bob” Grau passed away, January 14, 2014, in his home surrounded by his loving family & devoted dog, Lucy. He was born May 25, 1931 to Carl and Mary (Walmsley) Grau at Toledo Hospital. He graduated from Whitmer High School, in 1949 and married his high school sweetheart, Beatrice Mohr on October 18, 1952. During the Korean War, Bob served in the U.S. Navel Reserves. He owned and operated the Western Auto Store on Dorr near Reynolds until 1986, after which he drove school bus for Washington Local Schools and the Boys & Girls Club. He served as president of Glann School PTA, was a founding father & first president of the S.W. YMCA, and a council member of Epiphany Lutheran Church. He loved his many years at Round Lake, Manitou Beach, MI, fishing, waterskiing, & teaching family & friends to ski and snorkel. He was an avid tennis and softball player, known for pitching many a game into his 70's. In retirement, he & Bea enjoyed traveling the US and Canada, including two trips to Alaska in their motor home. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Bea and his adored children: Sherry (Michael) Vinson of Fremont, Peggy (Eric) Ornstein of Morton Grove, Il., Patty Lueck of Newburgh, NY, Steven (Tina) Grau of Sylvania, and Cathy (Tim) Wilson of Escanaba, MI., his grandchildren: Jason Grove, Katie Grove, Kelsey (Mike) Heinz, Adam Ornstein, Chris Lueck, Karissa, Eli, Cianna, and Gabrielle Grau, Sarah (Terry) Pearson and Alex Wilson; one great grandson, Joel Robert Pearson and a great granddaughter Heinz due in March. He often said that he had a wonderful life and will always be remembered for his loving and giving spirit. In that spirit, he donated his body to the University of Toledo Medical Center. Family and friends may visit from 1 p.m., Saturday, January 18th, until the time of the memorial service at 4 p.m., in the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Avenue. Memorial contributions may be made to ProMedica Hospice, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo, or the PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) Foundation.
