Roy D. Tibbits Sr., 76, passed away on Tuesday April 8, 2008 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio following a series of illnesses. Roy was born on November 11, 1931 in Toledo to Renzo and Lena (Brand) Tibbits. Roy attended Holland High School (now Springfield) where in 1947 as a freshman, he met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Jones. During High school he excelled in all sports and was voted All-League and MVP on their undefeated football team. In 1998, he was elected to the Springfield Athletic Hall of Fame. On October 21st, 1950 he and Barbara were married and have been together for almost 58. He enlisted in the Navy and was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Hornet. Upon his discharge, he became employed at the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. where he held various positions until he retired in 1986 as a first level supervisor. During the Late 60's and early 70's he was president of the Communication Workers of America (Local 4319) union. During his adult life, he enjoyed fishing, bowling, hunting, golf, and country-western music. After retiring, he loved watching his four grandsons compete in various sports, Ohio State Football and most of all spending time with his beloved wife Barbara. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara; children, Roy Tibbits Jr., and Amy (Tom) Hughes; four grandsons, Evan and Aaron Hughes, Roy III and Alex Tibbits; brothers Harold (Marge) Tibbits and Bob Tibbits. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eddie, Ken, Chet, Don, Jack "Dick" and sister Hazel. Friends are invited to visit from 2:00-8:00PM on Monday, April 14, 2008 in the Ansberg-West Funeral Home where funeral services will begin at 11:00AM on Tuesday. Interment will be private. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
