Services for Bernard “Bernie” Scharsu, 96, of Mentor, will be at 5:30 PM on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Mentor Baptist Church, 7500 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Mentor. Pastor Brian Landrum will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 3:30-5:30 PM on Friday, prior to the service, at the Church.

Mr. Scharsu resided at Golden Living Center – Western Reserve in Kirtland for the past three months. He went home to his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 21, 2017.

Born May 28, 1920 in Cleveland, he lived in Mentor for the past 43 years.

He was a World War United States Army veteran and an active member of Mentor Baptist Church and will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He had a great love for all animals and spending time outdoors, where he was happiest connecting with nature.

For many years, Mr. Scharsu was a volunteer at Lake Hospital Systems, where he would visit with lonely and ill patients. He also volunteered at the Salvation Army serving meals and ministering to the needy.

He was employed as a salesman for the former Rimes Trucking Company, retiring in 2005 at the age of 85.

He served for many years as the president of the Cleveland Traffic Club.

Survivors are his daughters, Kathy (George) Denkowski, Lisa (Randy) Horst and Lynn (John) Marics; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and sister, Ruth Welty.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Edith I. Scharsu, on November 13, 2016. His brother, Jack; sister, Edith and step-children, Benny and Delores are also deceased.

Private interment will be in Knollwood Cemetery.
