David A. Hammond Obituary

Services for David A. Hammond, Ph.D., 92, of South Euclid, will be at 1 PM on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Willoughby United Methodist Church, 15 Public Square, Willoughby. The Rev. Donald R. Perks will officiate at the service.

Dr. Hammond passed away peacefully, following a long illness, surrounded by his family on Monday, March 11, 2013.

Born June 20, 1920 in Newport, VT, he was a longtime Cleveland area resident.

He was a member of Willoughby United Methodist Church, where he was in the Men’s Fellowship, served as an usher and taught Sunday school for many years. He enjoyed traveling, skiing, fishing, gardening and was an avid reader. He was also a member of Kendal at Home and enjoyed many of their activities.

He was a graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont and earned his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering at the former Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland.

Dr. Hammond was a research scientist with Saint-Gobain, formerly Harshaw Chemical Company. He held multiple patents in his field.

He is survived by his children, Robert D. (Patty) Hammond of Orange Village, Margaret Sagri of South Euclid, Bruce A. (Joyce) Hammond of Clarkston, Michigan and Patricia (Ken) Blask of Painesville; grandchildren, Andria Sagri, David E. (Talia) Hammond, Elizabeth (Daniel Smith) Hammond, Alissa (Michael Shields) Sagri, Bradley Hammond, James Blask, Kimberly Hammond, Christopher (Kristine) Hammond and Sarah Blask; great grandchildren, Malik, Myles, Lily, Camden, Mabel and brother, Eric (Barbara) Hammond of Derby, VT. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Phyllis Hammond and many nieces and nephews and their families.

His wife of 63 years, Elaine Hammond, passed away January 20, 2011. His parents, Earl S. and Marion (Coburn) Hammond; brother, Milton Hammond and sister, Priscilla Plante are deceased.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Friday, March 15, 2013 at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Avenue, Willoughby.
