Services for Don E. Powers, 91, longtime resident of Mentor and formerly of Willoughby will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, April 15, 2016 at Erieside Church on the Boulevard, 221 East 320th St. Willowick. The Rev. Larry A. Pozza will officiate at the service.

He was born August 6, 1924 in southern Ohio to the late Frank and Blanche (Wilkinson) Powers.

He served in World War II with the First Division, in the European Theatre, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and many other campaigns and was promoted to the rank of S Sgt. He was a member of VFW Post 3863 in Eastlake, Palmer-Roberts American Legion Post 214 in Willoughby, the First Infantry Division, and a life member of the 26th Regiment (Blue Spaders).

He served several years in different offices in both The Gideons International (40 years), and as a 75-year member of Erieside Church on the Boulevard.

Don retired from the Ohio Motorist Association, (AAA) as a Vice President in 1987. In his earlier years with the club he served as the Roads/Weather man broadcasting over WSRS during the winter months, was the author of the Northeastern Ohio & Cleveland maps, and the Mystery, and Overnight Tours where he was known as “AAA Andy”, a nightgown & nightcap with candlestick holder individual, which was the directional symbol of the Overnighter tours.

He is survived by his three children, Don Powers, Diane (Bob) Heintz, and David Powers; grandchildren Robert (Carolyn) Heintz, Keith Heintz and Don F. Powers; great-grandchildren Stefani, Tori, Alex and Kevin Heintz; sister Delores Thorne; sister-in-law Phyllis Stafford; many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet of 72 years in 2015; siblings Walter Lewis “Louie” and Luella “Lou” Beck Powers.

Remembered as the patriarch of the family, a man of great faith and loved by all.

The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 PM Thursday at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Ave., Willoughby. Final resting place will be in Whitehaven Memorial Park, Mayfield Village.
