Obituary
Services for George H. Eckert, Jr., 82, of Madison Township, will be at 4:30 PM on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Avenue, Willoughby. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until the time of the services.
Mr. Eckert passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at his home.
Born April 19, 1931 in Cleveland, he was a longtime Eastlake resident before moving to Madison Township more than 30 years ago.
He served in the National Guard and was a member of Willoughby Lodge 302 F. & A.M. and Jay Williams American Legion Post 112 in Madison. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, reading, writing poetry, attending car shows, gambling, visiting casinos and was also an avid collector.
Mr. Eckert was a police officer for the City of Eastlake for 15 years, and then served as Chief of Police in Buckeye, Arizona for one year before returning to Ohio. He also worked several years as a maintenance man at Cleveland Cotton Products, retiring in 1993.
Survivors are his loving wife of 58 years, Geraldine (Alexander) Eckert; sons, James A. Eckert of Windsor and Ronald L. (Barbara) Eckert of Muskegon, MI; granddaughters, Cassandra (Nicholas) Brugh of Mentor and Allison Eckert of Winston-Salem, NC; great-granddaughter, Ava Marie Brugh and sister, Marjorie Lehman of Mentor. He also leaves his niece, three nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Sr. and Katherine (Schuster) Eckert and brother-in-law, Bill Lehman.
Masonic services will be conducted by Willoughby Lodge 302 F. & A.M. on Sunday at 4:30 PM. The Rev. Donald P. Beaumont of Bethel Lutheran Church in Willowick will officiate at the service.
