Obituary for John Roe

Memorial services for John N. Roe, Jr., 87, a lifelong Willoughby resident, will be at 5 PM Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Avenue, Willoughby. The family will receive friends from 1-5 PM, prior to the service.
Mr. Roe passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Mentor-Way Care Center in Mentor.
He was born August 25, 1923 in Willoughby. He was an United States Army veteran, serving during World War II, receiving a Presidential Unit Citation with his regiment, and was a member of the American-Legion Palmer-Roberts Post 214 in Willoughby, where he served as post commander. He was also a member of the First Christian Church of Willoughby, and volunteered with the clean city commission in Willoughby.
Mr. Roe was employed as a mold and die maker at the former Ohio Rubber Company in Willoughby, retiring in 1988 after 38 years of service. He also drove a school bus for the Willoughby-Eastlake Board of Education for nine years and operated his own business, Custom Woodcutting and Splitting for over 40 years.
He is survived by his children, Robert (Anne) Roe of Willoughby, Betty A. Unger of Eastlake, Mary A. Roe (Reed Robertson) of Willoughby and John N. (Deborah) Roe, III of Rock Hill, SC; son-in-law, Eugene Townley of Stafford, VA; 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; brother, William Roe of Wayland, MI and sisters, Ethel Cudney and Susan Mix, both of Palmetto, FL. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and their families.
His wife of 63 years, Betty L. (Spears) Roe, passed away May 25, 2010 and his daughter, Judy A. Townley passed away in 2009. His parents, John N. Sr. and Johanna (Grieger) Roe and sister, Alice Ondo are also deceased.
The Rev. Richard D. Norton of the First Christian Church of Willoughby will officiate at the service. Private burial will be in Willoughby Memorial Gardens.
