Obituary
Services for Pyong Kun (John) Chong, 89, will be at 11 AM on Friday, March 16, 2018 at Mentor Baptist Church, 7500 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Mentor. The Rev. Brian Landrum will officiate at the service.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Avenue, Willoughby and also on Friday from 10-11 AM at the Church.
John passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 4, 2018. He had lived in Chardon for 40 years before moving to Mentor a few years ago to live with his daughter.
Born January 28, 1929 near Gwangju, South Korea to Gil Won Chong and Mon Yo (Lah). He immigrated to the United States with his wife and children in 1972, sponsored by Jim and Twila Dodson of Kirtland.
Pyong enjoyed tinkering with all things mechanical; but in addition to his family, his great passion was gardening. He took pride in his sizable garden where he worked tirelessly for hours each day, even until age 88. He learned his trade as a mechanic working with the United States Army in Vietnam.
After coming to the United States, he worked as a mechanic for the Dodsons’ in Kirtland, Best Sand Corporation in Chardon, and later Morton Salt Company in Grand River, before retiring in 1994. He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior in 2015.
Pyong is survived by his wife of 65 years, Myoung Soon Chong, children Young Sook (Wayne) Clough of Madison, Sook (Douglas) Reid of Mentor, Hyun Chong of Willoughby, Ran Sook (Gunther) Evanina of North Royalton, and Im Sook (Bob) Reinhart of Sewickley PA; grandchildren, Sean, Stephanie, Wolfgang and Sydney Clough, and Doug Jr. and Emily Reid) and nine great grandchildren.
Final resting place will be in Chardon Municipal Cemetery, following the service on Friday.
