William I. O'Brien Obituary

Services for William I. “Bill” O’Brien, 89, of Willoughby, will be at 9:30 AM on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Reformation Evangelical Lutheran Church, 34730 Lake Shore Boulevard, Eastlake. The Rev. Barbara Holzhauser will officiate at the service.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM on Friday, August 21, 2015 at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Avenue, Willoughby and from 8:30-9:15 AM on Saturday, at the Church, prior to the service.

Mr. O’Brien passed away Monday, August 17, 2015 at his home in Willoughby.

Born June 2, 1926 in Schram City, IL, he was a longtime resident of Timberlake Village before moving to Willoughby in 1988.

He was a graduate of Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro, IL, class of 1944 and Ohio University in Athens, class of 1952, where he was a member of Acacia Fraternity. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a radar operator aboard LST 843, acquiring a rating of Petty Officer Third Class, traveling throughout the South Pacific.

Bill was an active member of Reformation Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving many years on various church committees and on the church council. He was fond of saying, “Oh, and one more thing; I love my Church.” He was also a longtime volunteer at Lake West Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 2010. He enjoyed Captains Baseball, reading, investing, casino gaming and visiting the racetracks.

Mr. O’Brien was employed as a fleet manager at East Ohio Gas Company in Cleveland for 32 years, retiring in 1987.

Survivors are his sons, David of Bellefontaine and Robert “Bob” (Linda) of Elida; daughter, Kristen (Philip) Fragassi of Cleveland Heights; grandsons, Anthony and Mitchell Fragassi and brother, Jim (Barbara) O’Brien of Taylorville, IL. He also leaves his dear friend and caring companion, Karen Marsh. They lived and loved and enjoyed life together for several years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Virginia on December 17, 2010 and his parents, Oscar “Bob” and Elizabeth O’Brien.

Final resting place will be in Willoughby Cemetery following the service on Saturday.
