Rubye Catherine Cox Obituary

Mrs. Rubye Catherine (Gawf) Cox, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at age 111. She was born in Emery, AR on January 31, 1904 and lived most of her life in Muskogee, OK. Married to the late Van Brent Cox, they were grocers in Muskogee for 36 years. One corner of their store was devoted to sale of Bibles and inspirational books. A graduate of Northeastern State University in 1925, she taught high school English and French. She was an avid reader and gardener. For over 30 years she headed the children’s department at Boulevard Christian Church, trained young people to teach and encouraged young men to enter the ministry. She was noted for hospitality to visiting evangelists, missionaries, Bible College professors and students. She and Brent helped found a new congregation, Muskogee Christian Church.


At age 98, Rubye moved to Bristol, RI to reside with her daughter and husband, Fred and Betty Gilbert, until she entered Silver Creek Manor in 2004 where she received wonderful loving care.


Rubye is survived by son, Carlyle Cox and wife, Bernice, of Gainesville, GA; daughter, Betty and her late husband, Fred Gilbert, of Bristol, RI; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Shloss, age 103 in Sarasota, FL; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Rubye was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, V. B. Cox; parents, John and LeNora Belle Gawf; brothers, Lavern, Elmer, and J.C. Gawf; sisters, Frances Gawf Rogers and Ruth Branum.


Family viewing will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, December 12, 2015, at Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home Chapel in Muskogee. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery.
