Doris Gwendolyn Shelton Obituary

Doris Gwendolyn Shelton was born on 25 January 1928 in Soper, Oklahoma the daughter of James C. and Byrdie Lee Crow. She was reunited with her cherished husband, George Clyde, on April 1, 2020. Some of her earliest memories were of running through the cotton fields of southeast Oklahoma and playing with her seven brothers and sisters. Though they were expected to pick cotton and help the family financially, there was always time for fun. After the sun had departed and the family was ready for bed she would fall asleep to the sound of her mother singing the gospel hymns that had been passed from generation to generation. Gwen was saved at an early age and this would serve as the springboard for her lifetime love and commitment to Jesus Christ. She met her future husband through corresponding with her brother Thomas during World War II. Clyde, as he preferred to be called, and she began writing letters back and forth and when he was discharged they finally met and began dating. They were married in Turkey, Texas on August 12, 1945 and immediately set up housekeeping in Cushing, Oklahoma as her new husband had accepted a position with the Deep Rock Petroleum Company. Their years in Cushing were happy ones as they made many friends that would remain such for the rest of their lives. They began a family first with Jan in 1951 and added a second son, Joel, in 1958. As the oil industry began to take off, Deep Rock changed its name and decided to relocate their headquarters in Oklahoma City and the young couple made the move in 1963. Gwen first went to work as a salesperson at Jerome's and was very successful, however even at a young age she had been fascinated with the art of styling hair. She finally made the leap and attended beauty college with the aim of eventually opening her own beauty shop. After she had completed her courses graduating at the top of her class she and Clyde decided to make the move and opened Gwen's Salon of Style. For the next forty years the salon would undergo several changes in location and personnel yet one thing remained a constant. If you became a customer, not only would you receive all the care and attention that you expected, you made a lifelong friend. Long after the salon closed its doors in 2012 her customers still flocked to Gwen's house and she would make sure that they looked just right before they left. Gwen left and undeniable mark on each and every person that she met. She was always there if someone needed a friend and she would always be willing to lend a hand and offer words of encouragement from the Bible that was almost always constantly by her side. The only thing that she loved more than hair was her garden. From early spring until the first frost no matter how hard or how long her day had been, you would always find her in the yard tending to the plants that she loved so much. She once said that it was in her gardens that she felt the most at ease, as she could let go of all the troubles and think and pray. The week before she departed she was making plans for what she was going to plant this year. Gwen was preceded by her parents, all of her siblings and Clyde in 2015. She is survived by both sons, Jan and Joel of Oklahoma City, granddaughter Savanna Myers and her husband Jesse of East Haddam, Connecticut, granddaughter Courtney Shelton of Tulsa, grandson Zachary Shelton and his wife Emily of Oklahoma City and great grandchildren Abigail and Jacob Shelton of Oklahoma City. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and friends. Gwen left an indelible mark on every person she met throughout her life and while her passing will be mourned, they all are left with the knowledge that they are better persons for having had her in their lives. Think of seasons that must end, see the rivers rise and fall, they will rise and fall again. Everything must have an end, like an ocean to a shore, like a river to a stream.
