Francis John Engel Obituary

Francis (“Fran”) John Engel, Jr. was born to Dorothy (Powers) and Francis J. Engel, Sr in Oak Park, Illinois April 3, 1929. He married the love of his life, Joan Ellen (Burton) on November 13, 1950. Together they had five children: Michelle Francis Engel-Larson (husband Chuck) of Sioux Falls, SD; Thomas (“Chap”) Engel (wife Diana) of Durango, CO; John Engel of Vista, CA; Kim Harry (husband Brooke) of OKC, OK; Susan Engel-Rome (husband Michael) of OKC, OK. They had seven grandchildren: Jeremy Engel, Sam Larson (wife Molly), Gretchen Miller (husband Justin), Drew Dargen (wife Evan), Max Dargen, the late Anthony Francis John, and Sean Engel. They were also blessed with seven great grandchildren: Mia and Nicca Engel, Drake and Henry Larson, Clavin and Josie Miller, and Piper Anne Dargen. He served proudly as an officer in the United States Air Force for 27 years. He fought for his country in three wars - WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Upon retirement from the military, his career continued with NASA in Houston, TX; EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, SD; and Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, CA. Throughout his career and after retirement he traveled the globe with his wife. He spent endless hours with his children and their families as an exceptional father and devoted Poppa. Fran could fix anything and had a vast tool collection. He was the smartest guy you might ever meet. He was funny, and quick witted and an all-around great guy. If you were lucky enough to know him, he was unforgettable, generous and a faithful friend. He loved movies, B-17’s, and peanut butter and jelly on English Muffins. He loved his “Joanie”, his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. He was full of life and love and wasn’t afraid to show it. He was preceded in death by his wife “Joanie”, daughter “Ning”, and grandson Anthony Francis John. He is resting in peace knowing he lived a long and wonderful life. A memorial service will be held on a future date at All Souls’ Episcopal Church. Memorial contributions in Fran’s name may be made to the Commemorative Air Force “Keep ‘em Flying!”, or the charity of your choice.
