Nelda Jean Toal Obituary

Nelda Jean (Taylor) Toal was born October 7, 1927 in Dallas, Texas the daughter of Robert Emmett and Velma Lee (Robinson) Taylor. She completed a well-lived life on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at the age of 92.

Nelda married Thurman Wilson Toal on April 11, 1947. They raised their children in Teague, TX; Des Moines, IA; Chicago, IL; and El Reno, OK while Thurman was with the railroad. They retired to Lake Kiowa, TX and eventually moved to the Oklahoma City area to be closer to their children. The family moved often, and Nelda jumped right in at each location, always joining Newcomers Club or starting one if there wasn’t one there already. Nelda maintained lifelong friendships from elementary school and each location where they lived all the way to the friends of her grandchildren she met 85 years later. She blended seamlessly with any age group. She was an actively involved stay-at-home mom while her kids grew up, and later had a career as a medical transcriptionist and office manager. She loved bridge, golf, reading, travel and volunteer work, and loved hosting friends in her home. Thurman preceded her in death on June 16, 2009 after 62 loving years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Jean Toal.

Nelda was the best mom ever to her children, Lisa Porter & husband Dave of Lake Kiowa, TX and Kyle Toal and his wife Susan of OKC. She was an inspiration to her grandchildren who called her Nonie: Justin & Peyton Porter, Blake and Kendall Porter, Beau and Cara Porter, John & Carrie Toal, Coralee Toal, and Benjamin Toal. She delighted in her-great grandchildren Brooks, Nora Belle, Caroline, Hugh and Jackson.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of Legend at Jefferson’s Garden, Valir Hospice (especially Sharece & DJ) and Right At Home for their loving care of Nelda.

A private memorial service will be held at Saint Luke’s United Methodist Church with inurnment in the El Reno Cemetery.
