Darlene Carter

Darlene K. Carter, 63, Antis Township, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Friday afternoon August 12, 2016 at her home after a courageous fight with cancer. She was born September 11, 1952 in Altoona, daughter of Lois (Moyer) and the late Clarence W. Frye. She married Geary L. Carter on August 31, 1974 at Grace United Methodist, Altoona. Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Allison B. (John) Clabaugh of Tipton, Attorney Ashley R. Carter (fiancé Dr. Chibueze Ihunnah) and Lauren A. (Ryan) Sweitzer both of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Abigail M. and Carter J. Clabaugh and Jacob W. Sweitzer; her mother; two brothers, Melvin C. (Sandra) Frye and Robert B. (Linda) Frye both of Antis Township; and two nieces and nine nephews. Darlene was a 1970 graduate of Altoona Area School District and a 1974 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University. She retired in 2014 after 30 years of teaching, including the last 24 years as a history and English teacher at Bellwood Antis School District middle school where she helped with the start of the National Honor Society program and the school yearbook. She thoroughly enjoyed hearing and seeing the success of her students. She also started and headed a Brownie Troop in Bellwood for nine years. Darlene was a member of Hillside Community Church, Bellwood. She loved the Lord and her family time together, especially with her grandchildren. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed travel, making afghans and rooting for and attending sporting events especially those involving Pittsburgh sports teams and all types of Penn State University games. Friends will be received from 3-5 & 6-8pm Monday, August 15, 2016 at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood and from 10-11am Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Hillside Community Church, Bellwood. A funeral service will be held at 11am Tuesday at the church, Pastor Ken Beichler officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Township. The family suggests that contributions in Darlene’s memory be made to Bellwood-Antis High School Scholarship Fund for a scholarship to be established in her name.
