Harold Beers Obituary

Harold E. Beers, 85, Antis Township died Thursday evening December 5, 2019 at Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. He was born May 5, 1934 in Ashville, son of the late Dewey H. and Ruth C. (Hollen) Beers. He was twice married, first to Margaret E. Frank in Hollidaysburg and she preceded him in death. He then married Deanne Hazzard in West Virginia, and she died in 2006. Surviving are a son, Harold J. of Antis Township; two daughters, Susan M. of Antis Township and Barbara A.; a grandson and a granddaughter; a brother, Merle Beers of Fort Erie, Canada; a sister, Marie DeAngelis of Dysart; and five nieces and five nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Paul. Harold was a 1953 graduate of Cresson High School. In 1952, while still attending high school, he joined the Naval Reserves and then began serving on active duty in 1955 for nearly 15 years. Following his Navy career, which included being stationed on seven prestigious ships; USS Tinnerman, USS Kidd, USS Bainbridge, USS Little Rock, USS Bennington, USS Kitty Hawk and USS John F. Kennedy, he enlisted with the Army National Guard and in 1994 he earned retired status at the rank of staff sergeant after fifteen years of service. Harold retired as a power plant mechanic at Penn State University after 29 years of service. He was also a self- employed appliance repairman for Gables Department Store, Altoona. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bellwood. He served as past exalted ruler of Tyrone Elks, past president of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Bellwood and was a life member of United Veterans Association, Bellwood. Harold enjoyed attending reunions for the first nuclear powered destroyer, the USS Bainbridge, one of the ships he served on during his Navy career. He was an avid Penn State fan and had attended the recent Penn State vs. Rutgers game. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8pm Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood. where a vigil for the deceased will also be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am, Monday, December 9, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bellwood, Rev. Father Jozef Kovacik as celebrant. Committal, with military honors, will be at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood.
