John Walker Obituary

John A. Walker, 85, Pleasant Gap, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning at Wynwood House, Centre Hall. He was born in Altoona son of the late John C. and Leah (Dukeman) Walker. He married Doris Jean Johnson on August 12, 1949 at Tipton Baptist Church. Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years; five children, Ronald J. (Debi) of Mt. Wolf, Cheryl D. (Barry) Siters of Haines City, Fla., Donald N. (Mary) of Bellwood, Joyce A. (Tom) Hartsock of Bellefonte and James R. (Barbara) of Bellefonte; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Janet) of Duncansville; and two sisters, Sally (Dick) Hippensteel of Apopka, Fla. and Janet (Bob) Capper of Corry. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Bob (Thelma) and Charles (Doris), and a sister, Florence “Sis” (Jim) Kissel. John grew up on the Walker Tree Farm in Tipton and was a 1948 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School. He had worked at Walker’s Feed Store, Bellwood, was an independent truck driver and formerly worked for SKF Industries, Altoona and the Bellwood Antis School District as supervisor of buildings and grounds. John served as director of maintenance and transportation at Bellefonte School District and in 1991 retired as superintendent of buildings and grounds at Centre County Vocational Technical School. After his retirement, he drove school bus for Micnichols Bus Service until 2010 where he was known as Pappy Walker. John held membership in the Keystone Chapter of F.F.A, Excelsior Fire Co. No. 1 Bellwood, an honorary member and statesman #56 of the Pennsylvania Jaycees and was a ticket taker at the Grange Fair, Centre Hall. John also served as a member of the Bellwood Antis School Board and was an amateur woodworker. Friends will be received from 6-8pm Friday, Feb. 6, 2015 at Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, Milesburg and 11am -1pm, Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015 at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood. A funeral service will be held at 1pm Saturday at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood, the Rev. Norman Huff officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Township.
