Joseph L. Newman, 66 of Altoona died unexpectedly Sunday at his home. He was born in Centre County son of the late Joseph M. and Minnie (Dunlap) Newman. He married Darlene K. Wrye on Sept. 27, 1980 in Bellwood. Surviving are his wife; a son: Cory J. at home; two brothers: Bill Newman of Milesburg and James (Lois) Mort of West Decatur; three sisters: Joyce McCloskey of Centre County, Linda Basom of Harrisburg and Betty (Merrill) Weller of Julian; several nieces and nephews; his father in law: Edwin Wrye of Bellmeade; and a special friend of many years: Terry Smith. Joe was a 1967 graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School and a graduate of Penn State University earning a degree in rehabilitation education all while maintaining honors throughout his college career. Joe was owner and operator of the snack shop located at PennDot. He published a book “Space Odyssey” and enjoyed reading, listening to music and spending time with his pets. Joe enjoyed talking and counseling others. He always maintained his sense of humor even through the many obstacles he endured in his life. Joe loved his family and always put their needs above his own. At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
