Michael Nesbella Obituary

Michael B. Nesbella, 93, a resident of Hollidaysburg Veterans Home died Tuesday October 29, 2019 at the home. He was born Feb. 1, 1926 in Lilly, son of the late Michael and Mary (Andrasko) Nesbella. Surviving are his daughter, Stephanie A. (Brian) Wertz of Huntingdon; three grandchildren, Brandon, Devon and Whitney; a brother, Peter of Carlisle; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by ten siblings and his second wife, Barbara Saunders. Michael was a US Marine Corps veteran having served during World War II. In July 1944, he was sent overseas to Hawaii where he trained for combat and eventually took part in the battle of Iwo Jima in February of 1945. Michael was awarded a Purple Heart medal for injuries received on March 23, 1945, along with only 19 members of his original company of 235 Marines. He was a 1961 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education majoring in biology and general science. He taught junior high school for five years before leaving for a career as a manufacturing chemist at Witco Chemical Corporation, Trainer, Pa where he retired in 1991 after 23 years of service. Michael was a member of St. John Fisher Catholic Church, Boothwyn. He was also a member of the VFW, Boothwyn where he served as chaplain. His favorite avocation was taxidermy and he was also an amateur ornithologist, mycologist and botanist. He enjoyed gardening and hunting. Michael’s family would like to thank the staff of Hollidaysburg Veterans Home and Asera Care Hospice for the excellent care they provided for him. Friends will be received from 9 to 10am, Friday, Nov. 1, 2019 at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood. A funeral Mass will be held at 11am Friday, Nov. 1, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bellwood, by Rev. Fr. Jozef Kovacik, celebrant. Committal will be at Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall.
