Nicholas Padula Obituary

Nicholas J. Padula, Jr., 81, Tipton died Sunday evening July 28, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. He was born December 13, 1937 in Irwin, son of the late Nicholas J. and Mary (DiTomaso) Padula. On Feb. 26, 1960, he married Lynne A. “Bunny” Prosser in Wellsburg, West Virginia. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Nicholas J., III (Kristan) and Joseph F. (Karen) both of Tipton; a daughter, Sandra M. (Ronald P.) Smith of Antis Township; five grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, Paige, Joey and Nicholas IV; and a brother, Bill of Dyer, Indiana. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Jim. Nick retired as a division engineer of maintenance and way at Conrail after 33 years of service. He coordinated the rebuilding of the railroad in Johnstown after the flood of 1977. Nick’s dedication to the railroad earned him a railroad curve named in his honor, “Padula Curve”, located at mile post 246. In 1988, he supervised the reconstruction of the Tipton Creek Railroad located at DelGrosso Amusement Park, Tipton, where he is honored with a plaque. During National Rehabilitation Week, Nick was honored with a personal achievement award given by Health South Rehabilitation Hospital, Altoona for overcoming the devastating effects of a massive stroke he suffered in 1999. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bellwood. He enjoyed tinkering with cars, and especially enjoyed his 1988 Corvette. Nick’s greatest joy was his family. The Sunday dinners, with Bunny’s homemade spaghetti and meatballs, followed by Pittsburgh Steelers football games, were his happiest days. He was also a fan of Penn State football. Throughout his amazing career he always made time for his family, providing them with a secure and loving home. He looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. He will be so greatly missed. “Thumbs up Dad!” Private services will be held at the convenience of his family. Committal will be at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood. The family suggests that contributions in Nicholas’ memory be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
