Pierce Geist, 98, Bellwood passed away early Tuesday morning June 25, 2019 at Maybrook Hills Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Altoona. He was born December 24, 1920 in Knoxdale son of the late Pierce and Lulu (Smith) Geist. He married Helen L. Bonsall in 1949. Surviving are his beloved wife of 70 years; three children, Cynthia (Richard) Butterbaugh of Bellwood, Gregory (Janice) Geist of Tipton and Anne Geist Szymkowiak of Valencia; and five grandchildren, Philip and Elliott Geist, Megan Butterbaugh and Nathan and Rachel Szymkowiak. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Robert Geist, Estelle Klins and Jean Thrush. After his graduation from Brookville High School, Pierce served in the US Air Force from 1942-46. He later graduated from Clarion University and Penn State University. Pierce retired as a teacher at Altoona Area School District, where he served his entire career. As a member of Logan’s Valley Baptist Church in Bellwood, Pierce served the Lord by singing His praises in the choir, teaching Sunday School and participating as a deacon and church moderator over the years. He enjoyed traveling, baking, reading, life-long learning, boating and watching Pittsburgh sports teams. Pierce could often be seen around the area searching for treasures with his metal detector. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 pm Friday, June 28, 2019 at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood. A funeral service will be held at 11am Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the funeral home, the Rev. Robert Coddington officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Township.
