Spencer William Hauenstein, 86, Presbyterian Village, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Bellwood, died Thursday evening at his home. Born in Carbondale son of the late Russell F. and Frances (Spencer) Hauenstein. He married Phyllis J. Greenwood who preceded him in death in 2010.
Surviving are two daughters: Barbara Spencer and husband, Dan Dreibelbis of Halfmoon Township, and Patricia Battista and husband Don of Vero Beach, FL; two grandchildren, Jeffrey and wife Sonal Battista, Vero Beach, FL, and Megan and husband Glynn Steckler of Frederick, MD; four step-grandchildren, Marsha Dreibelbis Callahan of Warriors Mark, Jennifer Dreibelbis of State College, Michael Dreibelbis of Port Matilda, and James Dreibelbis, State College; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean H. Horger of Taylor; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews whom he also loved.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eric, in 1983.
Spencer was a graduate of Carbondale High School; attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, VA and Scranton University. He received his B.S. degree from Boston University; and his Master of Arts degree from New York University. He was a US Army veteran of WWII serving on active duty as paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division, 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and ten additional years with the Army Reserve. His professional career included employment as physical therapist at Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, New York City, NY; Chief Therapist/Director of PT at Altoona Hospital; the Altoona Center; Hillview Convalescent Home; and Spencer retired from Blair County Home Nursing Agency in 2007 after 29 years of service. Spencer was a lifetime member of Logan Valley Presbyterian Church, Bellwood, including service as Ruling Elder and Deacon. He was also Commissioner and Trustee to the Huntingdon Presbytery, and formerly served as president of Bellwood-Antis Council of Churches.
Spencer served 12 years on the Borough of Bellwood Town Council. He was chairman of Blair County Planning Commission, and advisory member of Home Nursing Agency. Spencer volunteered many years with Meals on Wheels; was a regular blood donor for the American Red Cross; a telephone volunteer for Contact Altoona. He was very active in Boy Scouting, serving as District and Council Commissioner, Jamboree Camp Commissioner, leader for Canadian Canoe and Philmont Expeditions; National Camp School staff; and also served as advisor and Wood Badge Course Director for 25 years.
Spencer was a member of Logan Lodge No. 490 F&AM having served as Worshipful Master; and was District Deputy Grand Master of the 20th Masonic District. He was also awarded the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award for Scouting. He was a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite for Freemasonry and served as Most Wise Master in the Chapter of Rose Croix, and as Trustee for the Valley of Altoona, AASR. He was also elected to Honorary 33rd Degree Mason. Spencer also held membership in the York Rite Bodies and the Jaffa Shrine, serving in the Drum and Bugle Corps for 16 years.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, September 28, 2014 at
Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood where a Masonic Service will also be held.
A funeral service will be held at 11a.m. Monday, September 29, 2014 at Logan Valley Presbyterian Church, Bellwood, Rev. Barry Vance and Rev. Charles Curley officiating. Interment at Blair Memorial Park,
Antis Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Logan Valley Presbyterian Church, Bellwood.
