Virginia Tarner Obituary

Virginia E. Tarner, 89, formerly of 843 Fifth Street, died Thursday January 26, 2012 in Menno Haven Nursing Center. Born March 23, 1922 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter S. and Flossie Ecton Metz. Virginia was a 1940 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, a 1943 graduate of Garfield Memorial School of Nursing in Washington, and a graduate of Millersville State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education.. Early in her nursing career, she was Pediatric Nursing Supervisor at Chambersburg Hospital. Virginia also worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Immunizations. She worked part-time at Chambersburg Hospital while raising and nurturing her children, before eventually returning to work full time, retiring from the Chambersburg Area School District in 1980 as a school nurse. Virginia was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. Virginia, along with her late husband Clarence, chaired the church’s committee on Records and History. She was active with the Girl Scouts as a troop leader and consultant, a charter member of the Chambersburg Quilt Guild and a member of the Kittochtinny Historical Society. Virginia was one of the original participants in the Harvard Medical School’s Nurse’s Health Study. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Marotte (wife of Maurice III) of Chambersburg; two sons, Scott E. Tarner, Sr. of Chambersburg and Dennis Tarner (and wife Elizabeth) of Ashburn, VA; seven grandchildren, Stephanie L. and Dawn C. Tarner, Maurice L. IV and Phillip A. Marotte, Douglas A. Crawford, Scott E. Tarner, Jr., and Elizabeth A. Coldsmith; and three great-grandchildren. Aside from her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Clarence E. Tarner, who died on August 6, 2009; a daughter, Janice Crawford; and a sister Doris Willman. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday January 30, 2012 at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Chaplain Robert Keener and Rev. Dr. Dianne Salter will officiate. Interment will follow in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Sunday and one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Virginia E. Tarner Memorial Nursing Scholarship, c/o Chambersburg Area School District Foundation, 435 Stanley Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201 or Menno Haven Benevolent Fund, 2075 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
