Mary E. Herr Obituary

Mary E. Herr York/Glen Rock Our beloved mother, Mary Elizabeth (Grove) Herr, entered into eternal rest on March 24, 2020 at Normandie Ridge. She is the wife of Roger G. Herr, who died in 2005, and had celebrated 45 years of marriage. They resided in Glen Rock for 41 years. Private family graveside services will be held at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Herr was born in Felton on July 3, 1937, to the late Charles E. Grove and Elizabeth (Flinchbaugh) Grove. She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Glen Rock where she served on various committees. She volunteered with the Young Community Women’s Club of Glen Rock and was an Assistant Girl Scout Leader with the Glen Rock Girl Scouts. Mrs. Herr was a 1955 graduate of Red Lion High School. She worked as a nurse assistant at Friendship Elementary School and then began a 25-year career with the US Postal Service as a clerk in the Glen Rock and Shrewsbury post offices. Survived by three daughters; Sue Good and husband, Jay; Elizabeth Boliek and husband, Steve; Barbara Ebaugh and husband, Mark; 10 grandchildren Steve, Jr., (Sue), Sarah (Jed), Megan (Trevor), Cory, Andy (Jess), Dan, Adam (Amber), Emily, Katey (Luke), John and 12 great-grandchildren; Karleigh, Ethan, Matthew, Aiden, Nate, Athan, Scarlett, Bruce, Atlas, Mavis and Izzalia; a sister, Florine Harris and husband, Earl of York; a brother, Fred Grove and wife, Wendy of Arizona; sisters-in-law, Nancy Grove, Hilda Grove and Marilyn Gross; many nieces and nephews; predeceased by a sister, Betty Grove, and brothers W. Francis Grove, Charles H. Grove, Donald B. Grove and great-granddaughter, Adrianna. Our family extends its deepest love and gratitude to the Memory Care staff at Normandie Ridge for their devoted love and care shown to mother. A special thank you to the staff of Hospice and Community Care. Memorial donations may be made to Our Daily Bread, York Rescue Mission and The Salvation Army, all of York. March 17, 2020 WE ENCOURAGE YOU, UNLESS YOU ARE A FAMILY MEMBER, AS THE CDC, PRESIDENT TRUMP AND GOVERNOR WOLF HAVE STATED, NOT TO ATTEND PUBLIC GATHERINGS OF OVER 10 PEOPLE. THE NEW CDC GUIDANCE RECOMMENDS THAT "FOR THE NEXT 8 WEEKS, ORGANIZERS (WHETHER GROUPS OR INDIVIDUALS) CANCEL OR POSTPONE IN-PERSON EVENTS THAT CONSIST OF 50 PEOPLE OR MORE THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES." THE CDC SUGGESTED THAT FUNERALS CAN STILL TAKE PLACE UNDER THE 50-PERSON LIMIT. FOR FUNERALS TAKING PLACE, THEY SUGGESTED LIMITING ATTENDANCE TO SELECT FAMILY. THEY FURTHER ADVISED THAT THOSE WHO ARE ILL AND ARE AT-RISK (E.G., ELDERLY, IMMUNE-COMPROMISED) SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO STAY HOME. FUNERAL HOMES SHOULD ALSO URGE ATTENDEES TO FOLLOW RECOMMENDED HEALTHY HABITS SUCH AS SOCIAL DISTANCING, HAND HYGIENE, COVERING COUGH AND SNEEZES, ETC. DIRECT EYE CONTACT, LOVING WORDS AND WARM SMILE ARE AS MEANINGFUL TO THE FAMILY AS A TRADITIONAL HANDSHAKE OR A HUG. Prevention: • Cover coughs or sneezes with your elbow. Do not use your hands! • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. • Clean surfaces frequently, including countertops, light switches, cell phones, remotes, and other frequently touched items. • Contain: if you are sick, stay home until you are feeling better. In an update on Monday 3/16/2020, the White House released “The President’s Coronavirus Guidelines for America - 15 Days to Slow the Spread.” AMONG THESE GUIDELINES ARE THAT PEOPLE “AVOID SOCIAL GATHERINGS IN GROUPS OF MORE THAN 10 PEOPLE” FOR THE NEXT 15 DAYS. It would appear this would impact funerals/viewings in that they would be limited – perhaps to immediate family only – for the next 15 days. Please follow the published CDC guidelines if planning on attending any services or public gatherings. One way to express your concerns to the family is to contact them in a week or two to express your sympathy. That is when they will need your kind words and love. Thank You for your cooperation.
