Carl Schnellenbach Obituary

Carl Martin Schnellenbach, "Schnell", 84 of Milmont Park, formerly of West Reading, died on December 17, 2017. Carl was employed by Ridley School District for 38 years as a phys. ed. and health teacher. He also started the wrestling program in 1960 and was the head coach for 54 years with Ron Tirpak by his side for many of those years. Carl was inducted into the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame in 2011 for being the winningest wrestling coach in Pennsylvania; he was also inducted into the Berks County Hall of Fame for his West Reading High School football career, and the Ridley Old Timers and Delaware County Halls of Fame. He had the privilege of coaching Ridley football with the late great Phil Marion and Phil's predecessors Joe McNicholas, Ralph Batty, John Wahler, Dennis Decker, and he had a short stint at Interboro coaching with Steve Lennox. Carl managed swim clubs throughout Delaware County and taught swimming lessons at Camp Sunshine, the Knowlton and Hidden Hollow Swim Clubs, and the Rocky Run YMCA at Garnet Valley Middle School. Carl was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Elsie Schnellenbach and his beloved son Marty (Lynn). Schnell is survived by his wife Deborah Grant, his aunt and uncle, Liz and Ammon Heckler of West Reading, children Karen Schnellenbach (Dave Ostrow), Kim Maiers (Chas), Kristine Stocku (Mike), Adam Schnellenbach, Mara Schnellenbach (Steve Baxter), and nine grandchildren: Carlee, Marty, Leana, Ryan, Drew, Brendon, Rachel, Brooke, Cole, and his crazy dog Otto. There will be a memorial service Sunday, January 7th,2018 one o'clock, at Ridley High School, with a reception following.
