Nicholas Catania

Nicholas F. Catania, 86, of Woodlyn, beloved brother, uncle, friend and mentor, died August 21, 2012 at Fair Acres in Middletown, PA. Born November 1, 1926 in the Woodlyn section of Ridley Township, he was the son of the late James V. and Mary S. Catania. He was a graduate of LaSalle College and served with the 65th Infantry Division of General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army during World War II and was decorated with the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for service. Nick was devoted to his family and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews. He was an avid golfer and sports fan, and especially loved the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies. He was the long-time Chairman of the Ridley Township Republican Organization, served as Ridley Township Controller from 1954 through 1965, Ridley Township Treasurer from 1966 through 1971, Delaware County Commissioner from 1972 through 1975, Delaware County Councilman from 1982 through 1989 and Executive Director of DELCORA. He received many awards for his exemplary public service, including Man of the Year, UNCO International 1973; Man of the Year, Christopher Columbus Memorial Association; Man of the Year, Chester Business and Professional Women; Man of the Year, Sons of Italy; Service Award – Lodge 27, Fraternal Order of Police; and the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Award of the Poor Richard Club of Philadelphia. He was known as a caring, respectful, and humble humanitarian who devoted much of his life in service to his community. Brother of the late James Catania, Francis J. Catania, Josephine Catania and Dolores “Dolly” Willert. Survived by his brother Charles J. Catania, Sr., several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation: Saturday, 8:30am to 11:00am at Our Lady of Peace Church, Milmont Avenue, Milmont Park, PA. Funeral Mass: 11:00am at Our Lady of Peace Church. Burial: SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple.
