Peter Maginnis Obituary

Peter T. Maginnis, Sr., 90, of Folsom, Ridley Township, passed away on March 8, 2014 in the home he was born and raised. He attended Ridley High School. Mr. Maginnis was the son of the late John, Sr. and Catherine (Conway) Maginnis. He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary C. (Humphreys) Maginnis; brothers, John, Jr. and Hugh Maginnis; sisters Nora Spanier and Dorothy Bonnes; Granddaughter Julia Hackett and Great Granddaughters Caitlyn and Claire Harvey. Mr. Maginnis is survived by his loving family of sons; Peter, Jr. (Diane) and, Joseph (Mary Eileen) and daughters; Margaret Sparks-Fagan (Joseph), Mary Patricia Pralle (Michael), Catherine Kreppien, Jeanne DiVito (Daniel), Anne Soslau (David) and Maureen Hackett (Joseph), Brother: James F. ( Marge ) Maginnis 17 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren, and dear friend Claire Shetter. Mr. Maginnis was an extremely dedicated member of the community in numerous roles. At the age of 24, he joined the Swarthmore Borough Police Department and serving from 1948 to 1987. On the evening of his retirement, the residents of the Borough turned all home, porch and street lamp lights on to honor Sgt. Maginnis for his dedicated service to their community. His devotion to law enforcement also led him to become a founding member of the Delaware County Law Enforcement Memorial. As a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, his dedication to community was further exemplified by his service as the school bus driver from 1952-1992. His care for children was never unnoticed. Additionally, Mr. Maginnis served as a lifetime member of the Folsom Fire Company for 74 years, fulfilling roles from firefighter to banquet hall custodian to president of the company. His voluntary dedication of lifetime service resulted in the frequently used banquet hall bearing his name in honor. As the 8th Ward Commissioner of Ridley Township for 32 years, he routinely demonstrated the connections and importance of care for community. Over the years, he received many commendations from local, state and federal authorities. As a family man, he also ran a family lawn service throughout Swarthmore, Wallingford and Marple for close to 50 years. In addition to caring for landscape, he involved his children as they grew and mentored the concepts of work ethic and achievement. Funeral Mass, Friday, March 14th 2014, 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Amosland Road, Morton. Friends may call Thursday evening, from 6:00 to 9:00p.m. and Friday morning from 10:00-10:45 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Burial is at SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, Pa. The family requests memorial donations be made to the Folsom Fire House, 4th and Sutton Avenues, Folsom, PA 19033 or the DELCO Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, 201 West Front St., PO Box 101, Media, PA 19063, or Firefighters EMS Memorial Fund 217 Saxer Ave. Springfield, PA 19064.
