Sister Alberta Manzo, OSF, (89) died in Assisi House on June 19, 2019. She was born Lorraine Angelina Manzo in Jersey City, the daughter of the late Antonio and Jean Manzo. Sister Alberta entered the Franciscan Sisters of Ringwood (a congregation that later merged with the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia) on May 16, 1951. She earned a BA in Religious Studies and an MA in Child Growth and Development from Seton Hall University. Sister Alberta taught for 28 years in Ringwood, West Milford, Brooklyn, and Emerson. Her second apostolate was at St. Anthony’s in Belleville and St. Anne Parish in Jersey City where she was director of religious education from 1983-2013. She was also involved for eight years with the Rainbow Program for children who have lost a loved one. She was a member of the Women Knights of Columbus in Brooklyn. Sister Alberta loved fundraising and arts and crafts. She also received many awards. She was honored as Woman of the Year by the mayor of Jersey City. She also received an award from the Knights of Columbus Council 137 for helping to fashion a Christian Sensibility of Heart through the Last Millennium and into the Next. She served at one point as director of vocations and was involved in the Sisters Senate in Brooklyn, Paterson, and Newark. She was also a member of the Franciscan Federation and was involved in the associate program for the congregation. All services will be held in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, Pennsylvania, 19014 on Thursday, June 27. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M. followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be in God’s Little Acre Cemetery on Friday, June 28, at 11 A.M. Sister Alberta is survived by her 21 nieces and nephews, her 53 great nieces and nephews, and by her Franciscan family. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.
