Aston, PA-Sister Marita Francis Barrington, OSF, 83, died in Assisi House on April 27. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 63 years. Sister Marita Francis (Marion Inez Barrington) was born in Philadelphia, where she was a member of St. Monica Parish and a graduate of Hallahan High School. She entered the congregation in 1948 and professed her first vows in 1950. She earned a BS in English Education from Villanova University in 1965 and an MS in Education in General Science from East Stroudsburg State College in 1976. Although Sister Marita began her years in ministry caring for orphaned children at St. Mary Home in New Bedford, Massachusetts (1950-1955), she ministered primarily in education on various levels and in parish ministry. She ministered in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for 19 years. She taught at St. Stanislaus School, Lansdale (1964-1968) and St. Pius X High School, Pottstown (1980-1982). From 2000-2012 she ministered in several areas, teaching part-time at Neumann University (2000-2005) and working as an associate at the Franciscan Spiritual Center in Aston (2000-2012). During those same years she also served on the faculty of the Camden Biblical Institute, a four-year scripture study program (2000-2012). In 2012 she moved to Assisi House where she served in prayer ministry until her death. Sister Marita Francis ministered for 31 years in the Diocese of Allentown. She taught at Holy Ghost School in Bethlehem from 1955-1964 and again from 1982-1987. From 1968-1980 she taught at Allentown Central Catholic High School. She also served in parish ministry at Assumption BVM Parish in Northampton from 1987-1992. Sister Marita Francis’ eight years of ministry in the Diocese of Camden included working at St. John Bosco Parish in Millville (1992-2000). From 2000-2012 she served on the faculty of the Camden Biblical Institute. All services will be held in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, on Thursday, May 2. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M., followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. Sister Marita Francis is survived by her cousins and by her Franciscan family. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.
