Donald Duncan

Dr. Donald D. Duncan, 74, passed away at Indiana Regional Medical Center on Saturday, January 17, 2009 after a long illness. He was the son of Dr. Leonard and Margaret Duncan born on April 11, 1934 in Pittsburgh. Dr. Duncan’s life spanned many activities and interest. He was a star athlete in high school and college and then coaching and teaching at the high school level before joining the Mathematics Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He served as a member of the U.S Army Reserve 22 years before his retirement with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Don and his wife Merrily shared a common interest of exhibiting and showing pure bred dogs. He was very proud of his Shetland Sheepdog Quill who was ranked number one in the nation. The Laurel Highlands Kennel Association Board of Directors was another activity of Don. Don loved and enjoyed his Steelers and Pens games. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Leonard Duncan. Don is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Merrily Duncan, sister in law, Silvia Duncan; niece, Suzanne Vecchio and nephew Scott Duncan and their families, Merrily’s siblings and their families, his personal caregivers; Jackie Russella, Melissa Painter and Lori Fails. Along the way Don collected “Rent a kid” and was special to many young people. He was a breakfast club regular. Friends will be received from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm, on Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Bence- Mihalcik Funeral Home, Indiana with an Informal Departure Service held at 7:30pm. . Family request the memorial contributions be made to the Mathematics Department, Indiana University Scholarship and the American Sheepdog Foundation: 500 Millstone Road, Chesapeake VA, 23322.
