John Flower Obituary

John H.E. "Jack" Flower Jack Flower, 94, formerly of Kane, died at UPMC Hamot on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from post-operative complications. Jack was born on March 29, 1923, in Kane, PA a son of John and Esther Samuelson Flower. He lived at Niagara Village Retirement Center, in Erie, PA for the last several years making many friends along the way. After graduation from Kane High School and working as an assistant manager of the Kane Nut Shop, Jack entered the Navy in June, 1942, to serve his country during World War II. He was deployed during the next 3 years serving on the USS Hugh L. Scott, USS William Biddle, and the USS James O’Hara as a First Class Seaman responsible for manning a landing craft that carried many Marines into Iwo Jima, Tinian Islands and other Marianna Island locations during the war. While serving on the USS Hugh L. Scott, the ship was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Casablanca on November 12, 1942 leaving 59 dead and 60 survivors. Jack spent two days in the water before being rescued and hospitalized with a life altering back injury. He was discharged from the Navy on November 28, 1945 as a Boatswain’s Mate Second Class and returned to Kane, Pa. Jack married Joyce Kelly in August, 1947. They were happily married and dedicated to each other for 62 years when Joyce died after a long struggle with cancer on October 9, 2009. Jack was also preceded in death by his parents, John and Esther Flower and his sister, Beverly Blystone. He is survived by his nieces, Nancy J. Augustine (Charley) Erie, PA; Sue Zampogna (Ron), Kane, PA and nephews, Jack Blystone (Betty), Valparaiso, FL; Don Lundeen (Colleen), Kane, PA; and, Jim Lundeen (Linda) in Vero Beach, FL. Jack spent his entire life in Kane, where he owned and operated a Gulf gas station with his brother-in-law, Harry Blystone; owned and operated the Homestead Ice Cream Stand where many Kane High School students received their first taste of working; and later worked at Stackpole Carbon from which he retired in 1988. He loved and followed baseball and football and was an avid Steeler and Pirate fan for many years. Jack excelled at golf with a 6 handicap for many years and swore that the game was built on being able to chip and putt, not hit the long ball. He coached and encouraged many kids at the YMCA in Kane and provided them with ‘Y’ memberships when they couldn’t afford the cost. Jack was nick-named, ‘Posey’, and was a permanent fixture on main street every day when he walked to and from his home on Janeway Street to pick-up his newspapers at Archer's until he was well into his 80’s. Jack will be sadly missed by his family and many friends he made along the way. He loved animals and will miss his dog friends, Mandy and AJ that made his day each time they visited him. He had a sharp sense of humor and remembered little details about every person that he met over the years. Friends will be received Tuesday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm Tuesday at Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Waterman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Tabor Cemetery.
