Deacon Jack Layton

Age 76, of McMurray, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017. Deacon Layton was retired from active ministry at St. Benedict the Abbot Parish, Peters Township, where he had served since coming to the diocese in 1984. He was ordained for the Diocese of Joliet in 1981 and served at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Bolingbrook, IL. Jack was incardinated in the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1997. Jack worked as a Certified Broadcast Engineer and consultant to Broadcasting Services. During his career, he worked at many radio stations in Pittsburgh, including KDKA, where he was the Engineering Manager. He received his Amateur Radio License in 1954 and broadcast under the calling name “W9UK.” Deacon Jack was an avid reader and passionate about literature. Over the course of his life, he published several books and articles. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; his daughter, Judith Layton Jones; his son, Christopher Layton and fiancée, Julia Marple; his grandson, Aiden Marple; two sisters, Kathleen DeCesari (Charles) and Patricia Clark (Jack); and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by a sister, Mary Hennessey (Fran survives) and a brother, Paul Layton (Michele survives). Funeral arrangements entrusted to BEINHAUERS, 724-941-3211. Family and friends will be received in the Chapel of St. Benedict the Abbot Church on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Friday from 12-2 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Benedict the Abbot Church on Friday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
