George Spencer Watson, a veteran of WWII, on Sunday, April 23, 2017. George, a resident of Hawthorne Woods Assisted Living, Washington, PA, was born on October 29, 1926 in Bentleyville, PA, the son of George Ernest Watson and Betty Melnick Watson. Mr. Watson was a Protestant his entire life, always being an active member of his faith. George was educated in the Bentleyville public school system, starring on the high school basketball and football teams. Upon graduating in 1944, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He was a member of the invasion force of Iwo Jima and later among the occupation forces on the island of Kyushu, Japan. Upon returning from the war, he attended Waynesburg College. Eventually, George moved to Detroit, MI to work for the Cadillac division of GMC. Later, he moved to Jupiter, FL, beginning work as a draftsman in the space industry. Several years later, he relocated to Huntsville, AL to work as a draftsman at the Huntsville Arsenal. He helped to design the communication system of the Saturn Rocket and eventually retired from the space system. Throughout his life, he enjoyed square dancing, bowling, golf, fishing, and playing sandlot baseball until the age of 60. He often remarked, “I’ve lived a great life and absolutely would not have changed anything!” In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brothers, W. Ernest Watson of Washington, PA and Franklin H. Watson of Bloomington, IN; his first wife, Dorothy Sirko Watson; and his second wife, Mary Ann Palmer Watson. Surviving are a brother, William S. Watson of Canonsburg, PA; a sister, Lorraine Jean Donham of Tennessee; his nephews: Wayne, Jay, Gary, Greg, David, Kenneth, Jeffrey, William, Michael, Christopher, and Mathew Watson and George Johnson; his nieces, Elaine Watson Brock and Ann Watson; and his stepsons, Wendell Jenkins and Stephen Duke of Alabama. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS, 724-941-3211. Friends are welcome at 2828 Washington Road, McMurray on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Interment will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies on Monday at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
