Maurine Ann (Symington) Unrath

Age 76, of Scott Twp., passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Devoted wife of Edwin “Nels” Unrath; eldest daughter of the late Maurice L. and Frances C. Symington; sister of the late Joan F. Descalzi. Maurine was born on February 23, 1941 in McKeesport. She received a bachelor's degree Penn State University and a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. A high school English teacher for 31 years, she taught for 26 years at Bethel Park High School, where she is remembered for her dedication to her students in such courses as Research Techniques, British Literature, and AP 12. Maurine won recognition of her teaching in Who’s Who in American Education. In 1995, she was recognized by her students as a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette All-Star Educator, and, in 1987, Maurine was Bethel Park’s nominee for Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. Maurine was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church and active in the church’s ministry to IHN and the Food Bank. Additionally, she was a volunteer with South Hills Interfaith Ministries (SHIM) and participated in the Soldier’s Angels organization. Always proud of her Scottish heritage, Maurine was an officer and member of the St. Andrew’s Society of Pittsburgh. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Jay Descalzi; two nephews, Doug and Craig Descalzi; and two beloved surrogate sons, David Hare and Jeremy (Suzan) Hay. Maurine will be remembered for her caring nature, being an all-star educator, and her infectious laugh. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS, 724-941-3211. Friends and Family are welcome at 2828 Washington Road, McMurray on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Baptist Homes Foundation, 489 Castle Shannon Boulevard, Pittsburgh PA 15234. They will be directed towards the building of the chapel at Providence Point.
