James Hanaway

James G. Hanaway, 88, of Meadville, passed away, Friday, May 31, 2013 at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community. He was born February 26, 1925 in Meadville, a son of Frank Victor Hanaway and Katherine L. Berg Hanaway. He married Thelma Harmon, she survives. He was a graduate of Meadville Area High School and a graduate of Robert Morris School of Business. James was employed with Abex Corporation as an accounting manager for 27 years retiring in 1986. He was the 101st Airborne, 506 regiment Screaming Eagles during World War II, they were the first unit to jump in the D-Day invasion in Cherbourg, Normandy and was wounded for the third time on the way to Bastogne, Belgium. James was a member of Saint Brigid Catholic Church, Taylor Hose, and a former member of the Meadville Country Club. He was an avid Pitt Panthers, Meadville Bulldog, and Allegheny Gator fan, and his passion was being on the golf course. In addition to his loving wife Thelma Hanaway of Meadville he is survived by a son, Mark V. Hanaway of Meadville; two grandchildren, Ryan and Jonathan Hanaway of Florida; two nephews, Thair Hanaway and his wife Candace of Atlanta, Georgia and Tandy Whitehead and his wife Theresa of Texas; a niece, Dawn Marie Hanaway of Shelbyville, Kentucky; two brothers, David Hanaway of Meadville and Lieutenant Colonel Robert Hanaway (Retired) of Winton, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew, Michael P. Hanaway. Family and friends are welcome to call on Tuesday, June 4th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Roofner-Collins-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 544 Chestnut Street, Meadville. The funeral and committal service will be held on Wednesday, June 5th at 10:00am at the funeral home with Father Johnathan Schmolt, pastor, of Saint Brigid Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Saint Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township. In lieu of flowers the family request donation may be made in James' memory to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org or to a charity of the donor's choice.
