Thomas E Cassidy, December 3, 1932 - August 29, 2020 Thomas Edward Cassidy, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and retired Marine, died Saturday August 29. The Plum Borough resident was 87. Tom developed a passion for sports at a young age. He was inducted into his high school sports hall of fame at St. Vincent’s Prep in Latrobe, Pennsylvania for his accomplishments on the baseball, basketball, and football teams. He received a scholarship to play on the Pennsylvania State University baseball team and was a walk-on defensive back on the school’s football team. After college, he joined the Sheet Metal Workers Union and began his career as a tradesman. During the Korean War, he enlisted in the Marines and became a sergeant, earning the National Defense Service and Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals. While in the Marines, he completed airman school and worked as an aviation structural mechanic. After proudly serving his country, Tom dedicated his life to his family and his community. Tom was a man of conviction and held various leadership titles in his career and within civic organizations. He liked to be in charge, and he was a legend within his family. A long-standing member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, he served 40 years in Local Union 12. He was also one of the founders in the Plum Borough American Legion where he could be found watching his beloved Steelers and conversing with members. Tom co-founded the Plum Midget Football League, coaching many of his sons’ teams to victories, and organized wheelchair basketball for those with disabilities in the community. Tom was a force of nature and a man of his word, always speaking his mind and giving a voice to the voiceless. In the words of his youngest granddaughter, Cailee Bea, he was “a tough cookie.” Tom loved everything Irish, especially his Irish coffee and Notre Dame. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing with his sons and friends and tending to his garden. Mostly, Tom was a proud family man. His legacy will live on in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as through the many people of Plum Borough whose lives he touched during his nearly nine decades. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Beatrice Cassidy, and six children Julie Rhyner, Tim Cassidy, Dan Cassidy, Michael Cassidy, Leigh Harkleroad and Stephen Cassidy. His grandchildren, Nadine, Karac, Ryan, Steve, Matt, Luke, Erin, Megan, Sean, Michelle, Katie, Paula, Kyle and Cailee Bea. His great grandchildren, Jax, Callan, Charlie, Cameron, Mirabelle, Connor, Wyatt, Dominic, Moses, and Kamryn, adored him. He was predeceased by his grandson Tom Dern. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in his honor.
