Donald C. Herrmann, a resident of Hartsville for the past 55 years, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011, in Naples, Fla. He was 84. Donald was the loving husband of Lorraine Herrmann for 63 years. Born in New York, N.Y., Donald was a son of the late Paul and Louise Herrmann. Donald was a graduate of the St. Francis Xavier High School, New York. He then attended and graduated in 1951 from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y., where he obtained a degree in electrical engineering. He also was a member of the Phi Mu Delta Fraternity. Donald was employed by Philco and later by RCA Broadcasting Division, retiring in 1985. While employed, Donald achieved many accomplishments. He held four patents with RCA for electrical engineering and was awarded the David Sarnoff Award by the Sarnoff Center, Princeton, N.J., for his exceptional contributions to electronics. Donald held a key roll in the development of the first color television camera. Mr. Herrmann was proud to have served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He had many interests, but his family was the center of his life. He enjoyed gardening, traveling the world and spending winters in Naples, Fla. He enjoyed spending time on the computer, especially playing the stock market. In addition to his wife, Donald is survived by his loving children, Donna Sandidge and her husband, Cary, of Nashville, Tenn., Diane Herrmann of Holland, Paul Herrmann and his wife, Lisa, of Doylestown, and Doug Herrmann and his wife, Connie, of Furlong. He also is survived by his three loving grandchildren, Sarah, Laura and Gregory; and a sister, Lorraine Doring. His funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June, 14, at Nativity of Our Lord Church, 625 W. Street Road, Warminster. Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 13, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Shelly Funeral Home, 1460 Easton Road, Warrington. Interment with military honors will be held at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown.
