Eleanor Zemel Obituary

Eleanor W. Zemel of Doylestown, PA died peacefully at Pine Run Health Center, at 102 years of age. Her beloved husband (Ralph) preceded her in death in 2007. They had been married for 67 years. Born in Dublin, PA, daughter of the late Jacob and Alice Zetty Whitman, she was a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania. Eleanor graduated from the Hilltown High School, Blooming Glen, PA in 1932; received her Associate degree from West Chester College in 1934; her B.S. degree also from West Chester college in 1952; and her Master of Education degree from Temple in 1955. Eleanor began her career in education in the Plumstead Township School District where she taught from 1934 to 1939. She then took a teaching position with the Upper Southampton (Shelmire) Elementary school where she taught for the next 14 years; was appointed Assistant Elementary Supervisor of the Centennial School District for 1953-54; was Principal of the Shelmire Elementary School from 1954 to 1961; was the original Principal of the Joseph Hart Elementary School, appointed in 1961, where she remained until her retirement. At her retirement ceremony school administrators, teachers, and parents shared the following: “Her manner is pleasing, her approach dignified, her cooperation splendid”, “She gave unselfishly of her time and talents and always without fanfare”, “She is a wonderful Principal, gives excellent support and help to new teachers”, and “I hope you know that any success we have achieved in the Centennial Schools have been due to a great extent to the part you have played”. One kindergartner summed it up with “She noticed me”. Eleanor was a life member of the National Education Association. Throughout her life she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, quilting and gardening. Her flowers were wonderful to behold, especially her favorites – daffodils. She and husband Ralph were regular church goers, loved to be outdoors and they both delighted in square dancing. Eleanor was preceded in death by three brothers, Claude, Earl, and Herb Whitman, and one sister, Mildred Allison. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 21, 2017 at the grave site at Durham Cemetery, Durham, PA. Funeral arrangements made by Shelly Funeral Home, Plumsteadville, PA.
