Henry McGonigal

Retired Lt. Col. Henry A. McGonigal Sr. of Pocono Lake for the past two years, formerly a 42-year resident of Warrington, passed away on Aug. 21, 2011, at the Pocono Medical Center. He was 93. Henry was the loving husband of Eleanor McGonigal. Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Joseph and Susan McGonigal. Henry retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after 30 years of service. He began his career during World War II and fought on Normandy Beach. Henry was a marksman and shot on the Army Pistol Team. He also enjoyed singing with the Air Force Band. In addition to singing, Henry loved music and dancing. He was an avid golfer and was an artist and enjoyed painting. Henry was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Harry and his wife, Lee Ann of Perkasie; and a grandson, Harrison of Nashua, N.H. He is also survived by a niece, Catherine Mauer. Henry was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph, William and James, and sisters, Catherine Willard and Mae Smart. Henry's Funeral Service with military honors will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011 at the Shelly Funeral Home, 1460 Easton Road, Warrington, where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be held privately. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bucks County SPCA, Box 277, Lahaska, PA 18931.
