Irvin Buckman Warrington Obituary

Irvin Buckman

Irvin M. Buckman passed away at his home in Doylestown on February 24 during the 3 o’clock hour, the Hour of Divine Mercy, at the age of 94. He was the husband of the late Helen Chew Buckman, who passed away during the identical date and time 16 years ago. Born in Trenton, he was the son of Franklin and Ethel Leedom Buckman. Mr. Buckman was raised in Buckingham Valley and was a graduate of Buckingham High School class of 1939. He is survived by his son William F. Buckman and his daughter Nancy Buckman Paravecchia (Vincent), four grandchildren: Vincent Thomas, Joseph, Valerie and Jeanette; also a sister Lois A. Daniels, wife of the late Edwin Daniels of Pineville, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Elva and his brother Wesley. From 1939 Mr. Buckman worked on a large dairy farm and in 1947 was employed by the Doylestown Building Company. During these years he married, adopted two children, moved to Doylestown and took many evening and Saturday classes at the University of Pennsylvania. Having received a Masters Degree in Education, he accepted a teaching position in vocational carpentry in 1960 at Reading Senior High School in Reading, PA, which he held until 1965. In order to be closer to home, he then accepted a position at the Eastern Montgomery County Vocational Technical School in Willow Grove and remained there until his retirement in 1983. First and foremost Mr. Buckman was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and founding member of the men’s choir from 1968 to 1983. He built many additions and alterations to his house in Doylestown. He was an avid gardener and sports fan, in particular of the Philadelphia 76ers. Having a thirst for learning he took many evening courses such as architectural drawing, welding, typing, cabinet making, fly tying and computer. He became very interested in archeology, genealogy and anthropology. In pursuit of these interests he became the reader of many books on these subjects as well as the history of several nations. With Mrs. Buckman he traveled twice to Israel to study the area traveled by Jesus Christ. Three times they went to the little village of Medjugorje in Yugoslavia on religious pilgrimages and once to Venezuela, South America. In addition, he traveled to Turkey and the Greek island of Patmos with his son to study the travels of St. Paul. While in London with his wife he researched the Buckman genealogy back to 1682 when his ancestors came to America with William Penn. Since that time he completed the family trees for the Buckmans, the Leedoms (his mother’s maiden name) and the Chew family of Philadelphia, each tree measuring two feet by three feet and containing about 280 names, dates and marriages. Friends may call at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Doylestown on March 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and the morning of March 2 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on March 2 at 10:00 AM followed by interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society of the church, 235 E. State Street, Doylestown, Pa 18901.
