Marilyn Gillan Canterbury, a resident of Doylestown for 29 years, died peacefully
Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010 at Doylestown Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She
was 69.
Born in Hammond, IN, on May 13, 1941, she was the daughter of Glen Raymond and
Katherine Christine Gillan. She graduated in 1963 from Butler University and attended
the University of Illinois for her Masters studies.
Marilyn was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Doylestown, who
directed and served on the Altar Guild and was an EFM graduate and co-mentor. A
longtime member of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization), she served as
both a State Convention Chairwoman and President of the AZ Chapter. A respected
amateur watercolorist, Marilyn exhibited in multiple local and out of state juried shows
and was a supporter of the Fox Chase Cancer Society Art Show, Doylestown Art
League, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art. She was a member of AAUW, the
Doylestown Country Club, and the American Contract Bridge League. Marilyn loved
playing bridge, stage plays, classical music, opera, and the beach. One of her greatest
joys and loves was the simple moments spent with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, John A. Canterbury, sons Glen G.
Canterbury and his wife Katie of Pottstown, Mark E. Canterbury and his wife Erika of
Buckingham, and her 3 grandchildren; Ethan, Grace, and Caroline. She is also
survived by her niece Shauna Fitzmorris of California & nephew Jeff Fitzmorris of
Colorado. She was preceded in death by her sister, Christine Todd.
Relatives and Friends are invited to a visitation on Fri. Sept. 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00pm at
Shelly Funeral Home, 1460 Easton Road (Route 611) Warrington, PA. The Funeral
Service will take place on Sat. Sept. 4th, 11:00am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 84 E.
Oakland Ave., Doylestown. Interment will be at Doylestown Cemetery.
