John Tavares Obituary

John Tavares, 80, of Almy Street, died Friday October 29, 2004 at home. He was the husband of the late Evelyn A. (Ferreira) Tavares. Born in Warren, a son of the late John and Marienna (Taveira) Tavares. He was a lifelong resident of the town. Mr. Tavares had worked in the maintenace department at Coats of North America for 3 years before retiring in 2000, and had previously worked in the shipping, Desma Room and as a truck driver at PFI Industries, in Bristol for 29 years, and Magnetic Seal, in Warren for 9 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and had been Junior Vice Commander of VFW Post 122. A communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. He was a member of the choir and a past president of the Holy Ghost Committee. Mr. Tavares was a 50-year member of the Warren Police Reserve. He was a member of the Little Rhody FOP Lodge and the International Association of American Fire Fighters. He had played in the Warren Indian Band. He leaves a daughter, Deborah Sousa of Warren, with whom he lived; two grandchildren, Bradley Sousa Sr. and Rachel Pavao; and five great-grandchildren; Tony, Kendra and Bradley Sousa and Kyle and Reese Pavo. He was the brother of the late Henry J. Tavares and Mary Roccabello. Burial will be in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery.
