David Ellington

David “Duke” Erwin Ellington of Westerly passed away Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the age of 72. He was born in Richmond, VA the son of the late Annie and Albert C. Ellington, II. David attended Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, VA graduating in 1963. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Groton, CT, holding the rank of Torpedoman’s Mate 3rd class. After his Naval service ended he went to work for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers where he was a member of Local 90 for over 20 years. After leaving the IBEW he worked for numerous local electrical and building contractors before retiring in 2012. David was an active member in local youth sports during the 1980’s, coaching in both the Stonington Youth Football and Pawcatuck Little League programs. “The Duke” as he was affectionately known by many, was an avid golfer and a fixture at Winnapaug Golf Course. He was also known to “frequent” Danny’s in Westerly, RI from time to time. David is survived by four children, David Ellington of Orlando, FL, Todd Ellington of Charlotte, NC, Russ Ellington of Preston, CT, and Susan Ellington of Fort Kent, ME; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Wayne Ellington and Robert Ellington. He also leaves his sister Beth Stell of Powhatan, VA; brother Albert Carter Ellington of Nags Head, NC; and sister Wendy Mingus of Chester, VA. Visiting hours will be held Thursday July 6th from 4-7 pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly, RI. A Celebration of Life will be held at a date and time to be announced.
