Mary Chernasky

Mary (Cherenza) Chernasky, of Dixon Street, Westerly, passed away at Apple Rehab Clipper on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, a few months shy of her 100th birthday, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Stephen M. Chernasky. Born in Westerly, she was a daughter of the late Salvatore and Christina Cherenza. Mary worked as a bookkeeper for both Atlantic Lumber and Cherenzia & Nigrelli. She was also a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church where she was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends at the Westerly Town Beach well into her 90s. She leaves her son Michael Chernasky and his wife Eileen; daughter Stephanie Volpe; and brother Leo Cherenza, all of Westerly. She will also be dearly missed by her three grandchildren, Edward Flynn, Kristan Bloys and Amy Chernasky; as well as four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Chernasky was predeceased by five siblings. A special thanks goes to the staffs of both Apple Rehab Clipper and Hope Hospice for their loving care. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 1-3pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Relatives and friends are also invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Monday at 10am at Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High St., Westerly. There is no procession from the funeral home to church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Mary’s memory.
