Peter Onisto Obituary

Peter Onisto of Westerly, RI passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 in his home. Born in West Hartford, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Louis and Theresa Onisto. He attended New Britain, Connecticut public schools before entering the US Navy Air Force in 1942, and served in the North African Theater during World War II, where he was an aviation machinist mate. Peter was honored for his military service this past April when he was part of the Honor Flight sponsored by the RI Firechiefs. The Honor Flight escorted World War II Veterans from RI to Washington, DC to visit the War Memorials there and be recognized for their service. Peter said “This was one of the best days of my life”. After an Honorable Discharge from the Navy in November 1945, Peter used his mechanical and engineering skills to start his own business, Eastern Tool & Die, Inc. in Newington, Conn. where he served as Secretary/Treasurer for 46 years. Aside from being an accomplished businessman, Peter was also an avid golfer and member of Indian Hill Country Club in Newington, Connecticut for 35 years and Winnapaug Country Club in Westerly, RI for 58 years. He played in many Pro-Am Golf Tournaments in Connecticut with major professionals of his day including Dave Stockton and Bob Rosburg. Peter has had a total of 5 Holes in One during his golfing career. He was known at Winnapaug for his gentle nature and his “never give up” attitude which kept him golfing and exercising at the age of 96 and up to days before his death. He was a member of the VFW Post 8955 in Westerly, RI and communicant of St. Clare’s Roman Catholic Church in Misquamicut, RI. Peter was predeceased by his wife, Elaine (Danko) Onisto and his sister Marie Suprenant of New Britain, CT. He leaves behind his daughter Geraldine Higgins of Bethlehem, PA; his son Allyn Onisto of Maulden, SC; his sister Anita Lacaprucia of Chicopee, Mass.; his brother Joseph Onisto of Allen, TX; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. In addition Peter will be missed by his best friend Annette Baba, many nieces and nephews, several devoted close friends and his golfing family at Winnapaug. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 20, 2017 from 5-7pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Clare Church, 62 Crandall Ave., Westerly at 10 AM , Saturday, October 21, 2017. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Britain, CT. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project in Peter’s memory.
