Richard R. Schaffhauser, of Pawcatuck, beloved father and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the age of 89. Born in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Louise Schaffhauser and Paul Nejime, formerly of Norwich. Richard was a teacher with Groton Public Schools and at St. Michael School in Pawcatuck until his retirement. He was a communicant of St. Michael Church. Richard served in the US Army in Japan during WWII. He was a member of the Pawcatuck American Legion, the Harley P Chase Post 1265, and the Germania Lodge of Norwich. He enjoyed the beach, bird watching, and astronomy. His greatest love was for his family and being a Grampy to his grandchildren. He is survived by his sons, Rick Schaffhauser and his wife Pam of Bremerton, WA, and Mark Langlois of Cumberland, RI; and daughters, Anne Nickson and husband John of East Greenwich, RI, Kathryn Irvine of Niantic, CT, and Kerry Muntimuri and husband Gabe of Ledyard, CT. He was predeceased by a daughter Laura Bernardo and sisters, Bernice Windbigler and Virginia Torok. Richard also leaves behind 12 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a niece Joyce Blatzer, a sister Diane Laveway of Windham, CT, and several other nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 5:30-7:30pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10am on Tuesday at St. Mary’s Church, 95 Main St., Stonington. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at Maplewood Cemetery, Norwich, CT.
