China Grove, NC -- Betty Jean Moss Creswell McDaniel, 84, of China Grove but formerly of Blacksburg, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012. Born on August 8, 1927 in Blacksburg, Mrs. McDaniel was the daughter of the late James Dewey and Edna Batchelor Moss. Mrs. McDaniel was first married to the late Bruce J. Creswell. She was later widowed by Guy E. McDaniel and was the thirty-five year companion to the late Jack Childers. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Bill Moss. A 1944 graduate of Blacksburg High School, she was employed for many years by the Cato Corporation and ended her career at age 80 with Byars Used Cars, where she served as a bookkeeper. Mrs. McDaniel was a former member of the Gaffney Business and Professional Women's Club and the Cherokee County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed crocheting and attending her grandchildren's various sporting events. Mrs. McDaniel was a fount of information on topics ranging from home remedies to cooking to local genealogy. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. McDaniel is survived by three daughters, Frances Helms and husband, Vance, of China Grove, NC, Pamela Wright and husband, Frank, of Gaffney, Corliss (Corky) Gold and husband, Richard, of Shelby, NC; two sons, Robert B. Creswell of Iron Station, NC and Keith Creswell of Gaffney; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren; and her sisters-in-law, Alice Moss and Mary Pearl Moss. The family will receive friends Friday, February 3rd, 2012, from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at Gordon Mortuary. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 4th, at 11:00am in the Gordon Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Rodney Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Clingman Memorial Gardens. Alan Upchurch, Christopher Upchurch, Joseph Upchurch, Mike Henry, Evan McCurry, and Jackie McCurry will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 1612 North Limestone Street, Gaffney, SC 29340.
