Kings Mountain, NC -- John S. Elkins, 79, of 107 Dover Avenue, passed away Thursday, November 17th, 2011 at his residence. Born in Illinois, Mr. Elkins was the widower of Lillian Wilson Elkins and the son of the late John L. and Mary S. Moomau Elkins. Mr. Elkins retired from the United States Air Force after 24 years of service. While in service, he worked as a flight engineer. Mr. Elkins is survived by three sons, Dale Stephen Elkins of Blacksburg, John David Elkins of the home, and Billy Elkins of St. Helens, MI; three daughters, Theresa Wray of Salem, VA, Debra Kay Shovey of Moncks Corner, and Mary Spencer of Michigan; a step-daughter, Annie Elliott, of Rock Hill; three sisters, Maxine Harrison, Beatrice Goodwin, and Thelma Lowe, all of Illinois; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Friday, November 18th, 2011 from 6:00pm - 7:30pm at Gordon Mortuary. Graveside services with full military honors will be held Saturday, November 19th, at 2:00pm at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Lincoln County, 107 North Cedar Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092. The family will be at the residence.
