Kay Blackwell

Spartanburg -- Kay Thompson "KayKay" Blackwell, 76, of 108 Courier Place, passed away Monday, November 8th, 2010 at her residence. Born in McAdenville, Mrs. Blackwell was the widow of Marvin Lawrance Blackwell and the daughter of the late Lewis Cox and Mary Frances Kay Thompson. She worked as an Instructional Television Coordinator for all Spartanburg County schools and was a member of Morningside Baptist Church. Mrs. Blackwell was the founder of the Col. Jacob Blackwell Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Snow Campaign Chapter, she was PTA President of Barringer Elementary School, Mrs. Blackwell was also a proud member of Cherokee County's "The Neighborhood," and while at Blacksburg High School, she received All State honors playing the oboe and was Salutatorian of her 1951 graduating class. Surviving Mrs. Blackwell is a son, Marvin Barry Blackwell, Sr. and wife, Beverly Giles Blackwell, of Charlotte; a daughter, Donna Kay Blackwell Childers and husband, Joe Michael Childers, of Spartanburg; four grandchildren, Leigha Giles Blackwell and fiance, Jonathan Lee Sink, of Columbia, SC, Joseph Michael Childers of Charleston, Marvin "Mark" Barry Blackwell, Jr., of Charlotte, and Laura Kay Childers Cox, and husband, Dustin Roger Cox, of Spartanburg; a great-grandchild, Connor Cayden Cox, of Spartanburg; a sister, Viola Thompson Stanko, of Blacksburg; an aunt, Eula Kay Gilliland, of Gaffney, three sisters-in-law, Rachel Blackwell Carpenter of Blacksburg, Angela Hardin Broome of Blacksburg, and Reatha Martin Blackwell of Kings Mountain, NC; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and a beloved helper and friend for 20 years, Katherine Ann Stroble. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Blackwell was preceded in death by a brother, William "Bill" Lewis Thompson. A memorial service for Mrs. Blackwell will be held Monday, November 15, 2010, at 4pm at Morningside Baptist Church with Dr. Kirk Neely officiating. A celebration will immediately follow at Mrs. Blackwell's residence. Memorials may be made to Morningside Baptist Church Library, 897 S. Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302, the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century National Library, 1300 New Hampshire Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20036-1695, or to the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
